They logged this with Autodesk and finally gave us a solution. The file extension of this file, with a completely different name, is. I remember those two threads when I was troubleshooting last week. While saving the Excel file, you have lost the connection to the file.

Ok, after installing and running the OffCAT tool appears the problem was we were missing some updates that came out July 6th, 2016. But the main offendor was an Adobe Acrobat PDFMaker plugin, conflicting with MS Excel. When you double-click an Excel workbook in Windows Explorer, a dynamic data exchange DDE message is sent to Excel. This message instructs Excel to open the workbook that you double-clicked. Therefore, the DDE message that is sent to Excel by Windows Explorer is ignored, and Excel does not open the workbook that you double-clicked. Please follow these steps to uncheck DDE option in Excel: Please go to File- Options- Advanced- Clear the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange DDE check box, and then click OK. Once Excel 2013 freezes, the rest of the system becomes unresponsive even after force quitting all running applications in the Task Manager. Reviewing the event logs from the computer management console, we're unable to see any related issues from the system side that might be contributing to the Excel problem. I will go ahead and install the OffCAT tool, I have used that in the past to troubleshoot a MS Word issue in Office 2010 on another system.
